Because he couldn't make a career in any other field of work. Much like many other media 'personalities'; Piers Morgan, Eamon Holmes, David Baddiel, etc. etc. Think about all the traits they have in common: 'in thrall with their own smugness', 'in love with the sound of their own voice', 'egotistical'. In any other job, they would have the shit kicked out of them on a daily basis. So, that's why they find work with their own kind.
