Guns FFS

Post by Hillman avenger »

Just been in Tennessee for a couple of weeks.

I was staggered to realise that we could not buy a drink without photo ID to prove I was over 21 ( I am 66, and would be delighted to have that challenged).

The age for buying a gun, however, is 18.

During those two weeks there was news of shooting deaths every day, including in the quite small town we stayed in for part of the time.

We went to a "family dinner entertainment" one night, which was very good, but as we entered I saw a notice that the operators had received permission to require people not to bring in firearms.....

Not sure about saying that about the whole country, but Tennessee is certainly an eye-opener. Curiously the gun thing is mixed up with the freedom/jesus milieu , and I think they do see getting drunk as possibly worse than going out for the night with gun in your pocket.

Some other things I noticed..

They have "shoot em up" cinemas where kids get to fire virtual guns at characters on the screen...unlike other states we've been to, and especially California, they are still wedded to driving about hauling half a ton of surplus metal behind them, and they are still loyal to Chevvy etc- in fact they are still managing to sell Jeeps there...we went up Klingman's Dome, the highest peak in the Smokies, and there's info there that the visibility from the top has declined 80% in summer and 40% in winter from 30 years ago, due to pollution..and that although there is several hundred square miles of forest there, the green areas are in decline in terms of their ability to absorb/regenerate for the atmosphere because of the acid in the rain.

We were asked several times about the referendum, and the overwhelming opinion there was that the Scots would be deranged to have voted yes...and the New York Times linked it to the possibility of us voting out of the EU. They reckoned we would lose massively if we left, and it would enshrine Germany was the US's major European partner. Several of the big banks are on record as saying they would be off to Frankfurt.

the right to bear arms goes way back and forms the building blocks of that country

the pressure to remove arms, by making ammo difficult to get hold of, staging shootings etc is to disarm the american public, the elephant in the room regarding what is coming

the wife is in the process of applying for her gun licence right now

we will have a couple of small arms to begin with, and with an enhanced licence, a shotgun and rifle

Blame us again. In United States v. Miller (1939) the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government and the states could limit any weapon types not having a “reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia”.

The 'well regulated militia' is the sticking point...ie: If the dirty redcoat Brits try to take over the US again (not likely of course)...the militia will kick some serious ass with their arsenal of guns stored up there in Wyoming and North Dekota.

I actually agree with this. OF course...there are always people who take it too far and ruin it for everyone else.

Mrs. Kite: From what I can see, the only time you ever jolly well *do* any work is when you're on strike.

Deranged in every respect.
Yes it was there at the beginning, but for entirely different circumstances and it has become an albatross around the neck of what is in many other ways a very civilised society.
Only 2 weeks ago a 9 year old child accidentally killed the person trying to teach her how to use machine pistol. What kind of people think that was a good idea, and why?
Sadly people are too uncritical of the stylised warfare they see in the movies and have no idea of how difficult it is to handle a gun properly.
If you seriously think attempts to disarm you are to make you subject, seek help.

A very simplistic, narrow minded view, Hillman.

Not like you at all.

The fact is, in every state that has enacted Right to carry concealed handgun legislation, violent crime including murder has dropped significantly if not dramatically

I might vote for him in that case. As you can see, this fat Arab likes his guns. My apologies for the poor quality but Mrs S isn't particularly good at taking photographs.

Good thread Hillman (ignore the green eyed goading naysayers)

I have been to the States a lot and have done various gun related activies... Venice Beach in LA was the most worrying, an armed stand off in the next hotel and a shooting the next night outside of a bar we were in! :smt071

I used to have guns

A "ÄŒZ 75" 9mm pistol and a "Smith and Wesson 586" with 6 inch barrel

I managed not to shoot anyone in the eight years or so I owned them

Must come as a surprise to the likes of Hillman
