There's a 25p store down here in Cornwall that sells lots of nearly out of date food items for 25p. It's been so successful they are opening a couple more branches this year.

You can always eat stuff that's past a best before date - sell by dates are a bit more risky, depending on the type of product it is.

As long as it's not bread, cake or meat you can eat it well out of date especially if it's in a tin - in which case even a few years out of date doesn't seem to matter. Biscuits can be put in the oven nd as long as the air does not get to chocolate that's OK for months after as well.

I like it when a stand full of beer has gone past the limit. 50p a can and I've been known to but the entire stand in one go if it's a decent one.

Often buy reduced last use by day stuff and eat days later. Smell test works to see if something is ok as often the psychological factor of wariness is more the problem, "oh noes, this is old I'll be ill."

Still, I might think about those sausages, pugsly.

Maybe socalled mollycoddled society scared of any germs. A decent constitution helps. As per, boring tale alert. When went to India, no jabs and ate plenty of street food. No problems.

Sometimes eat out of date fruit yoghurt, packaged food, chocolates, fruit juice, milk and fruit and veg. Similar to you pugs, I've not had any adverse effects and this is largely motivated by my utter contempt for wasting food I'VE bought when much of the planet starves.

One of my son-in -laws has a complete phobia about eating anything before it's best before date..
Teased mercilessly by the rest of us saying food is a couple of days out of date when it's not and he goes as white as a ghost and he's not even eating it

Unless the meat isn't the colour it should be, it'll be fine if you cook it thoroughly, whatever the Best Before says.

Retailers are very cautious on dates, but most stuff will be fine.

With meat, as long as it doesn't stink, you'll be fine.

Met a cheesemaker once who told me that any mould on cheese is perfectly safe to eat, too, provided it isn't orange/pink in colour.
ie fine to cut mouldy/dry bits off and eat the rest, whereas some people just chuck it all away. Same with jam.

I'll have just about anything out of date and which has started to go bad with the exception of milk that has cuddled. Have even eaten bread with bits of mold on and sour orange juice.

Don't really risk packaged stuff for more than 3-4 days.
Tins is a different matter.
Custard is the best for longevity . Had some 4 years old and still as good.
Worst is Chicken soup. More than a year out, and it comes out as congealed jelly.

I once worked in a spice factory and half way through a big consignment of garlic powder we moved into a new month, the dating machine automatically gave it a best before date 1 month later than the bags we'd done the previous day.

It shows how arbitrary these dates can sometimes be,

Slightly off topic, but went out for a carvery on Sunday and went for the pork. Looked good, but the edges of one slice looked as though it has just a touch of mustard on it. Never thought any more about it and wolfed it down, and shit (being the operative word), have I been in trouble since. Looked it up and it said that it was a sure sign of undercooking. Red meat is easy to spot if it's underdone, but the pork looked fine.

Recommend you give it the once over if you have it when out.

I've often used eggs which were over a month past the use by date.

All you have to do is put them in a bowl, or pot, with water and if they don't float they're fine.
