In 1987 Prince was all set to release the pure funk record ‘The Black Album’ but after having something of a spiritual epiphany he decided it was evil and had 500,000 already pressed copies of the album recalled a week before its release date.

That wasn't the reason. The album appeared as a bootleg before it's release (I had a copy) so he flounced and decided he wasn't going to release it.

Had he become a Jehovah's Witness back then?

No, that was later. Wiki says he became a Jehovah's Witness in 2001. Interestingly it also says he refused hip replacement surgery because JW's are against blood transfusions (which you'd most likely need during such a major procedure), with the hip being knackered due energetic to dancing, and him walking with a cane. Perhaps that's why he was taking the painkillers... an overdose of which might be the cause of death according to some sources.
