Re: Football International Break - Early September
In recent times, the break has been in August, which imo, was even more unwelcome.kancutlawns wrote:Perhaps the most unwelcome and irrelevant break of it's type in recent history from an England perspective. To the extent I felt compelled to start it a week early.
England after a typically shit Euros campaign have a dinosaur as the new manager with it's World Cup qualifying opener against the powerhouse Slovakia. Only thing worth talking about it who'll be captain.
Our Welsh, Irish, Scotch and Norn friends, what are your hopes for next week?

Ireland 1-0 after 5 mins. They'll be partying into the night in the Balkans.

Re: Football International Break - Early September
Great start for Alan Kernaghan's country, 1-0 up at HT in a crowd-less Beograd. If Ireland, that'll be a terrific 3pts. That group looks extremely open with no super team , but no dud either. If Bale is injured or out for some key games, he could be the reason for failure/success of Wales ; a bit like Snoddy for us Jocks.
Kosovo are playing their first 'official' qualifier tonight and 1-0 down at the moment. Wonder if big Shefqi Kuqi and his lesser-known but professional footballer brother will be partying in to the night celebrating his nation against his nation?
Shevchenko looking dapper in his H and M summer shirt, boating trousers combo on the sidelines taking charge of his first game in management for his country against Iceland. It's currently 1-1 at half-time.

Kosovo have scored their first ever competitive goal when equalising at Finland. Well done Kosovo.

Re: Football International Break - Early September
Tomorrow looks the dullest round of fixtures in the UEFA round - even Sweden-Holland and Switzerland-Portugal don't look too appealing.
Big games in Asia though. Japan had a shock 2-1 loss to the UAE, and are away to Thailand so they should pick up 3pts, whilst the mad Mullahs themselves host Australia in Dubai. Can Uzbekistan finally qualify for a WC? They've been the Bosnia-Herz of AFC after some very unlucky playoff loses in the past two campaigns, they are in Doha against Qatar. Whilst Syria are 'home' to Korea in Malyasia!!
Most likely there will be no surprises in CONCACAF. Canada again will most likely not be at a WC, what with their Jock heritage, not a hope! 3pts behind Honduras but 5 goal difference and Honduras with a better head to head. USA are on 10pts after a dodgy start are 3pts clear of Guatemala in third, and 1 behind Trinidad and Tobago.
South America is beginning to shape up the way it usually has these past 20 years e.g Venezuala, Peru, Bolivia will not be going to Russia! Whilst the rest all have a good chance.

Fine goal from Switzerland against Portugal as they go two up in the first half against the Euro champions.

Problems again for Holland as they're 1-0 down in Sweden.
