Thatcher and the poll tax

Post by Hillman avenger »

Under the release of classified papers today there's one that shows how Margaret Thatcher had to be sent a letter threatening legal action as her and Dennis had not registered.

Paying the poll tax was for the little people.

Steady on.
Her out of government was enough.
It's ironic that this was the issue that was the cause of so much unpopularity and which started the plotting in the party to get shut. I doubt that many Tories were bothered either way about th epoll tax, but what they don't like is a leader who they realise is now a loser.
I suspect in the cases of Hague and IDS that took them a matter of days to realise.

+1
I have greatest respect for Rugby Union, they started it mid-way through the 19th century. Thankfully we grabbed it and turned it into a spectacle on 29th August 1895

The people who moaned about the poll tax were the cunts who were paying fuck all. Our 'rates' at the time were £535,the poll tax was £135 per working adult per household.
So with my dad and mum grafting, and me as a grafting 20 year old we were fucking quids in in our four bedroomed detatched house in the posh part of Wigan.

Poll tax was a fucking cracking idea ruined by the lazy wasters of this country.

Do away with local council tax and fund the councils from central government. Paying a tax to fund local services based on how big your house is graded 25 years ago is a nonesense.

Get rid of the fucking lot......... no taxes at all, just a flat rate sales tax maybe a "Local" levy on top of that. No income tax no fancy lawyers and accountants no dodging it, buy something, anything you pay tax. slash the civil service by two thirds at least and thats why it will never happen.

Doing away with foreign aid would help.

I think everyone, man, woman, child should pay the equivalent of council tax to central government for defence of Britain and to pay countrywide stuff.

All other taxes should be collected by local authorities according to their levies set by themselves.

Get rid of the banking system, have local non profit making banks, let areas dictate how they think it's best to proceed.

It's only since 1652 that it's changed.

Make people responsible for themselves and the area they live in.

A formula for disaster.
Not saying it's right now, but this would be a disaster.
There are good reasons why we got rid of it in 1652.

So?

You think regions can flourish, or not on a whiem?

I've gave you my disaster Hillman, what's yours?

Let people do what they want and let others pick up the peices? (I know.)

What is wrong with people doing what's right for people, in areas that don't need help as such, just can do without being industrially raped by fucking cunts that I've never heard of telling me it's great?

I don't know what a "whiem" is.

But much of our problems arise from the structural economy we have, which sucks work and wealth into the south east.

There have been all kinds of ideas to try to assuage that, but it would be very much worse if each region lived off its own tax take. Some parts of the country would become wastelands. The regions where unemployment was highest would have the lowest tax revenues, but the biggest demand for welfare.

Ans, as Heenan says, there's more. Transport, health , education , law enforcement and much more would be threatened.
