There has ever been a truly left wing government in the UK apart from Attlee's and Wilson's first one (the latter to a lesser degree).

What we see now is a reaction to global events like the 2008 crash and war in the middle east/ north africa. The racist fanatical right is playing on people's genuine fear to pedal out their ulterior motives. The suppression of left wing voices by the establishment has left only the hard right as providing a vocal and robust alternative.
