I think the reaction to the French incident last night in the USA had been so enormous that it might have been the final straw.

Actually it could also be the Russians. Plenty of reason especially if they make it look like the Americans then let it fail . That'd actually be very clever, and they ARE very clever.
They wouldn't want the blowback from a successful coup, but a failed one which appeared to be the work of the USA or the Uk would drive a massive wedge between the already strained alliance between Saudi, Turkey and the West. It would also make it much less problematic to regain the rest if Syria for Assad.
