Not too bothered about that one to be honest Ralph. If they can't speak English when they come to England that's tough titty. These interpreters are on about 70 quid an hour which is fucking extortionate for what they do. There are plenty of people able to speak two languages so minimum wage or above will do

And don't some people take advantage of the service, a while ago, at my regular appointment at my local hospital (for which, I might add, I am grateful) an elderly gent was wheeled in in his wheelchair by a much younger man who spoke perfect English, the nurse asked the bloke' can your father manage to walk the few steps to the consulting room', yes, he could, but, 'the interpreter hasn't arrived yet so he'll have to wait', the nurse looked at him but didn't comment, he turned to the chap in the wheelchair and told him, in English, I'll come back for you in half an hour. Bloody hell, I'd already been there 2 hours, the interpreter turned up a couple of minutes later, the bloke got seen to straight away ( eye test, scan, injection) and out within 30 minutes, a process which I can't get through in less than 2 1/2 hours if I'm lucky, one time I was there nearly 5 hours, and this bloke gets seen to straight away because he needs an interpreter, now, why couldn't his son act as interpreter, or is this a way to jump the queue?

If they thought someone else would do it for 60 an hour they wouldn't, which many would.
The job is massively over paid so let them down tools. It would give someone with a sense of value to get someone else in at the proper rate.

In a sane world the cost of employing interpreters for processing immigration claims would be borne by the ‘claimant’, not the taxpayer.

As regards to the supply of interpreters, wrong as ever. One of the facets of the damage done by Grayling to the justice system is the "reform" of the courts interpreter system, aka as the slashing of fees. With the result that there is now a backlog of court cases, because of the absence of interpreters, which has cost more than Grayling's envisaged savings.

Re: Theresa May
I wonder, when these spurious academic bodies (such as UCL) compile their so-called independent reports of the ‘benefits’ of immigration (although even that UCL outfit has had to admit, as covertly as they could, that there is no ‘benefit’) if they include such hidden costs as interpreters? (in this case, possibly only a paltry £5million, but it all adds up).

My prediction is they'll either come to some agreement with the interpreters & that will be the end of it or there will be chaos & they'll start just waving people through to reduce the backlog.Hillman avenger wrote:Speaking to somebody about every day stuff is one thing; conducting a medical consultation is another.m4rkb wrote:Not too bothered about that one to be honest Ralph. When you go into hospital it is not the patients responsibility to understand complex medical terminology. In fact it doesn't matter one jot if they know none. Telling the doctor the symptoms only requires basic English.Hillman avenger wrote:Speaking to somebody about every day stuff is one thing; conducting a medical consultation is another.m4rkb wrote:Not too bothered about that one to be honest Ralph. The removal of foreign criminals and failed asylum claimants are cancelled in 40% of cases, a report has said.
Almost 34,000 airline tickets had to be cancelled in one 18-month period - with lack of staff to escort detainees one reason, the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration report said.
A separate report suggests officials have lost track of thousands of foreign students whose visas have expired.
I have already mentioned this on the terror thread, but what more does Ms May have to do before she gets sacked?
I cannot understand how she keeps her job. She must "have something" on Dave. It is the only logical explanation

Re: Theresa May
Just another shocking and disgraceful statistic, which we have become used to.
Not to worry though, The Home Office said....work was "already under way to address the recommendations relating to ticketing and escorting" and accepted all of the chief inspectors recommendations.
Work should have been fucking done to ensure that this didn't happen. If as an employee didn't act pro-actively in a private sector company and everything went tits up, they would be sacked.

I know how much you love May, Steve, but you need to consider this.
The wholesale outsourcing of public sector services means that the state no longer retains the capability to deliver these services.
So in many areas the only alternative to an outsourcer is another outsourcer with no experience.

Delighted to agree with you for once Hillman. As you know I detest the big state with its endless "public services" and consequent taxes. However there are obviously some essential services which actually need to be provided in the national interest (if that still exists).
These should be provided directly by the government . After all, they're doing bugger all else except wallowing in their own sense of entitlement in the face of the growing discontent with them, and if they want to dodge their responsibilities and pass it on to unaccountable third parties, why don't we just pay these people directly instead of taxes and save the inflated salaries of the Westminster parasites ?

the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC), sitting in London, ruled that the Algerians, who cannot be named for legal reasons, should not be deported even though they are deemed a threat to national security.
Absolute fucking bonkers. So it is considered that they are a threat, but they can stay here to fulfil it. Who sits on these courts? As it's in London, does the Mayor get a say?
