Moondust: In Search of the Men Who Fell to Earth.

I later found out it was on 'Richard & Judy's' reading list. Yet despite this, I can wholly recommend this. The author blathers on at points, but his meetings with the astronauts is facinating. Excellent read and well written. Easy to read.

The Unthinkable: Who survives when disaster strikes - Amanda Ripley.

An interesting and thought provoking book on who survives disasters and why. How humans react and behave in extreme circumstances and an ideal guide for those in disaster management to learn from the lessons of several disasters.

I am about halfway though Stuart McBride's Detective Logan McRae series that's set in Aberdeen.
Only started reading them because I have read all the Inspector Rebus books.
McBride is a cracking writer and his detail of the violence is great.

In one of the books Logan tells a another Policeman a story about a copper who had to go to a Drug Lord's house and tell him his son had died in custody and while he's telling the family one of his son's who has Hepatitis C sneaks out and sticks broken razors with his blood on them and sticks it underneath the driver's side handle with chewing gum.

The copper lost 2 finger tips and contacted Hepatitis C. 8)

His debut book of the series won a shitload of awards.

Pretty interesting, but reads like an extended university essay. Quite dry.

has it potential for a TV series? I never read Rebus, but loved the tv series with whatshisname, the old miserble cuntbloke name escapes me.

John Hannah did the first series, then Ken Stott, thanks Mr Wiki. TV series ok, read a few Rebus, all charity shop buys, decent detective fiction, but nothing special.

I like the look of Roddy's, kooster's and your, Carc's, suggestions. Had a summer of charity shop thrillers for easy reading, but bought this in the wonderful Poundland last week:

Saw it was his second book so though got first err first:

Only a few chapters in and building quietly but quite like. Don't mind spy stuff, always fascinating, inevitable reviewer comparisons to le Carré, who has a good place in my heart after a great handjob in the cinema watching 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'. :P

The best Rebus book was about the I.R.A and U.V.F getting diamonds because you can use them as currency and clam them down.
Then BANG things in the Helicopter fall and scatter like high level documents or Diamonds.
The whole book is based on this.

Cheers, Roddy. A few quid on Amazon, will have a check of the local charity shops first, always have a few Rankin.

Supporting local charities, Roddy and giving life to lost and fallen books.

Why pay 1p and £2.80 postage when can get it for 50p down the road? Err, you as a Scotchman should understand that. ;)
Donald was so mean, when his suit needed cleaned he donated it to a charity shop - and bought it back when they had cleaned and pressed it.
Err. :)

First Franzen book I've read - about 35 pages left - and fairly enjoyed it - and going by reviews, it isn't his best, yet I've strolled through it. Always meant to read The Corrections and probably will next.

Short snippets of US history. Perfect toilet reading and very short. I've made my own history book - full of inaccuracies and skipping decades - of countries, but if I wasn't so dumb nor lazy, I'd like to make a book like this - History for people who can't be arsed, but want to know the basics.

Good luck with Franzen! Just d/l'd the new Rankin book 'Rather Be The Devil'. I rarely read fiction so I'm not sure if it is good or bad, but it's easy to read and engaging. Rebus is retired and loafing around going through old cases, with Siobhian asking him advice about a new case...

Good post - thanks.

That's my next read sorted then. Didn't realise there was a new one out.
I might have done one - not sure but possible.
