Have you read it? Doesn't seem like a lad's book to me. It's easy-to-read escapism with a bit of action. Don't judge the books via the movie (which looks terrible.)

so the question is;

satire?

One would like to think so.....but one sees so many examples of "The Prince" being enacted in modern day politics it looks like it is regarded as being a pemplate for both ths siezing off and holding on to power.

For example, in one chapter Machiavelli expounds on his theory of "a strong ruler" identifies his enemies and goes to fight them in their owm bailiwick rather than let them come to his.

Which is precisely the reason Rumsfeldt et al were giving when asked what the USA was doing in Iraq.

Reading Pete Townshend's book "Who I Am" its tough going egotistical shite. I'm surprised its not called " Who I Am Volume 1 Part (A). Surely a man of his genius the man who invented feedback , the power chord and gave Jimi Hendrix his sound shouldn't confine himself to a mere 515 pages.

There is already another thread.

The other fred belongs in this section.

Good idea to start a book fred where it belongs, Narraback :)

All depends whether you think literature has a home in either Pandemonium or Media. I'd say neither, so it's far easier to leave the current thread the way it is.

This book is tremendous, IMO

It is the middle part of a trilogy (though the story is complete in itself) about political murder and intrigue in Sweden.

And the first volume for suire pre-dates Stieg Larsson, and I think this one might do as well though the English translation is only about a year or two old.

Well, Literature certainbly has no place in Pandemonium.

That other fred is in that Open Chat place.

Literature was always in this here Media section ever since I joined the forum and my thought is that this is the section where it belongs.

But you know, if Narraback wants to start a Literature fred here it is no big deal.

Just let him and if people want to join in they will.

I'm not 'forcing' anyone to do anything; merely adhering to a precedent ever since I joined the forum.
Any duplicate threads are either merged or deleted.

The former option may be the best solution, unless, that is, you fancy continuing this futile ball-swinging match for the next few pages.

I read this one over the New Year holiday.

Wonderful debut novel set in Spain during the Civil War and the decades afterwards.

'Any Empire' by Nate Powell. A half memoir/half fantasy on his growing up in smalltown America. It's 'Stand By Me' crossed with 'Lord of the Flies', 'The Goonies' and 'The Wonder Years' and it is just fantastic. It will resonate with anyone whose eighties childhood was spent hanging around with pals, creating petty rivalries with enemies, until parents shouted you in for tea:
