Think I told you in an old thread, Zambo, my old man a couple of years back did a southern states music coach tour: New Orleans, Nashvillle, Tupelo, Memphis and probably others. Had a grand ol' time. I got a Nashville pint glass and an Elvis mug, which was nice, genuinely.

Never been to New Orleans before, but the French Quarter is a putrid stinking hole, especially Bourbon St.

Went for a great swamp trip yesterday with gators, turtles and racoons, and visited an old plantation.

I think what has surprised me most on this trip is thd shit and the amount of it Americans shove down their throats.Went out for a meal last night and just fancied a plain burger. Took me about 5 mins to convince the waitress that was all I wanted. I think she thought maybe there was something wrong with me.

Anyway journey over, land back home tomorrow morning. Been good, particularly Nashville, but not my favourite part of the USA.

I had a friend who did a road trip thing last year (or the year before) and stayed in New York, Washington, Richmond, Atlanta and New Orleans and he said the only time he felt genuinely unsafe was in New Orleans. The rest of the places he said everyone could not have been nicer but New Orleans was the exception. He said it was a sewer.

The stench of the place was overpowering. Lively though with some good music, but not my scene. Looking forward to getting back now to the cold. It's been 90 degs here which is an unseasonal temp, and very humid. Just got to get through the shit that homeward air travel brings.

Yeah did all of those, but back home now, and just had a plain cheese sarnie and a cup of rosy. Heaven.

Heathrow was it's usual shite self though. Pulled up to the gate 15 mins early, but then the fucking thing wouldn't connect to the plane. 30 mins wait and they brought some stairs round.

Then Mrs Zs passport wouldn't work in these stupid new border control checks. There was this big queue and there were several geezers parading round in purple suits. I said to one can you help my wife. No he said it's not my job. Oh is that so I said, what the fuck is your job then walking round like a fucking tulip. I weren't happy at all. Finally got some silly mare who was having some toast to come and sort it.

Then got into arrivals and taxi driver was there, but when we went down into the car park only one ticket machine was working out of 5. Massive queue. I don't know what people who come into our country think we are fucking like, but whatever it is, it's on the money.

Yup - the whole experience is a fucking nightmare these days.

Even Stansted (which used to be the best) is now a hell hole.

Kept away from TV, and the only real noticeable street changes for me, was the number of down and outs in the towns and cities visited. I spoke to a fair few Americans and not once was the upcoming election mentioned btw.

I was in an area of high black numbers for much of the trip, and nothing came over, but during a couple of weeks on a holiday the chances are you won't see much anyway. Memphis was probably still the most segregated area I saw, and the Martin Luther King shooting site was eerie, with some black protesters still there from nearly 40 years ago.
