Great stuff, Lou, and yep the Alborosie is excellent. Never heard of Manuel Göttsching, but sounds good, will listen to it all sometime.

Think I got a bit of the lyrics wrong. I'm now sure it is, "Sensimilla is the king, it does the right thing, peace and contentment it always bring and it carries no sting." One of my old housemates was a Dub DJ and used to play it, gonna annoy me, but hey.

Whilst looking for it, a bit of Yellow Man:

Fuck. AB's youtube thread in 'Music & Other Media' reminded me how off the ball I am. :( #-o Candidates tourney to decide who plays Carlsen in November has being going in Moscow since 11 March until 30 March.

8 player double round robin. Penultimate round being played now in Moscow. Scores after 12 rounds:

Caruana looks favourite. Far too many youtubes to watch but will keep on from here. Some links:

Fuck it. Round 2, Karjakin v Nakamura. Nakamuru blunders. Excellent Jerry analysis and bringing in Al Pacino in 'Any Given Sunday': 8)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMBB11T8P0k

Round 10 and Caruana, my one most likely to challenge v my old fave Vishy Anand. Who wins this is likely to win the Candidates. Jerry superb and hmm Vishy:

Ha, and maybe also one for dear old RM. As we debated TV coverage of chess and how easy a highlights show would be, a couple of examples of US v err Soviet coverage including the lady in that dress from the last page.

This is from November's US Championship and an exhibition "Showdown in St Louis". A rapidplay game, Nakamura makes a hideous blunder and obviously loses. Think it is Yasser Seirawan, US GM hosting with Jennifer Shahade, US womens champion and poker player summarising. She plays poker as well. A better mans Vicky Coren indeed: :wnk:

Image

As lo as to go to action man, the as per way too excited Maurice Ashley in the cunt Kamara role. US rapidplay coverage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPuTWsu-XTk

Roll on to this month and round six of the Candidates tournament ongoing. Aronian v Nakamura. In chess, if you touch a piece, you have to move it. If you want to move a piece on its square with making a move, you say, "J'adoube", "I adjust". Nakamura touched his king in a likely drawing position, which lost then lost him the game.

Bit of controversy, not sure who the Russian chap is, but that is Alexandra Kosteniuk, she of the dress
summarising: :wnk:

Image

"Oh, he touched the King. Ooh he touched the King. He touched the King, he needs to move it. Oy yoi yoi". :) Official coverage:

Thought I'd posted the final round, but hey. So final round of the candidates, coincidentally Karjakin v Caruana, who are tied at the top and a winner takes all. Karjakin best off if a draw depending on other results.

No Jerry as he did not cover this. :? So back to our old friend Danny King. As always, a drier more tactical analysis, equally fine but not the fun of Jerry. Scroll down for result:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNzvzkUT3Ts

A wonderful game and analysis by Danny King. Tension all the way and the rook sacrifice to win the game and tournament for Karjakin, bewtiful Mike. So on we go to New York in November where Sergey Karjakin (26, youngest ever Grandmaster, ranked 8, rated 2779) plays World Champion Magnus Carlsen (25, ranked 1, rating 2851).

Thought Carauna would win the candidates' but called that wrong. But can't see beyond Carlsen in November. Was pondering a trip to NYC later this year, maybe on to tie in.

Bump from April. Finally FIDE (as bent as FIFA and the IOC) have announced a venue in NYC for Magnus Carlsen v Sergey Karjakin in November: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/ ... us-carlsen

http://nyc2016.fide.com/

Good times ahead though if lumping on with lash would go heavy on Carlsen, an overwhelming favourite. As per 2014 WCC, will provide video analysis and my own high quality analysis.

Here's the WCC2016 rules and regulations if anyone can't sleep: https://www.fide.com/FIDE/handbook/regu ... h_2016.pdf

I have played Harriet and drawn on the county matches Oxon v Hertfordshire back in the day. Lovely girl and very well spoken and intelligent.

Other interesting films featuring chess prominently are Computer Chess covering the various characters that turn up at an early chess computer tournament and The Luzhin Defence.

USA won the last Olympiad. Boo. Russia only managed the bronze despite being favourites. China won the womens tournament. Poland a surprise silver. Russia only fourth having won the last three tourneys. The American womens team was composed of a Georgian, Czech, two Ukrainians much like their mens team only Caruana was actually born in the USA.

Not really Carlos. :) Can't stand them. Mercenaries the lot of them. The Luzhin Defence is based on a work by Nabokov. His own life features in the film based on his novel being a chess player, an emigre from Revolutionary Russia like one of the main characters in the film and well aware of the suicide of the prominent German master von Bardeleben . Have to hope Russia wins the next Olympiads. Karjakin left Ukraine for Russia as well.... :D

I love some of the security measures they are trying to take to prevent cheating. Seems no sporting discipline can escape the desire for success and monetary greed. Heres the trailer for Computer Chess released here by Eureka on blu ray/DVD.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnoHSnJsy6Q

Many of the extras are actual programmers. The Chess Players by the great Indian director Satajit Ray depicts a regional ruler in India threatened by a British takeover who has no interest other than playing chess.

Some are mercenaries with the free market etc., Ove, Gata Kamsky a big name. But always has happeed, not though always for coin. Alekhine left the CCCP. Korchnoi left 50 odd years later.

As per will look up the film and interesting Nabakov background. 'Computer Chess' looks interesting and of course as an Indophile, know Satyajit Ray.

Ha about security measures, late on parade have been reading about Borislav Ivanov: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borislav_Ivanov Some interesting youtubes about.

Cannae see past Carlsen in NY and coincidentally will be there at the time. Might pop down to the South Street Seaport.

Whilst reading some Kasparov stuff about his Blitz performance in the States a few months back, see video v Nakamura, saw this article which for RM and my other posts, echoes much of what I said about the mental toll. Especially the names. Dear old Tal, poor young Morphy, Crazy cunt Bobby and Kasparov and yay, some kicking under the table. :) At the bottom of the Article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05 ... -st-louis/
psychological warfare
Five men mad about the game
PHOTO: Corbis

Mikhail Tal (1936-1992) was not only regarded as a creative genius but also a master of psychological warfare. It was said that the Latvian grandmaster would hypnotise his opponents with his infamous stare.
Tigran Petrosian (1929-1984) was partially deaf and known as a ‘mysterious’ player. It is rumoured he once became involved in a kicking war under the table, when he faced his rival Viktor Korchnoi (1931-) in a candidates match. History does not relate who started it.
When Garry Kasparov (1963-) sensationally lost to Deep Blue in 1997 he became paranoid that the IBM supercomputer was being secretly programmed by other grandmasters from a nearby hotel. He reckoned his old rival Anatoly Karpov (1951-) might have been one of them.
The greatest clash in chess history came at the height of the Cold War in 1972, when the American Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) beat the Soviet Boris Spassky (1937-) in Reykjavík. There was gamesmanship aplenty, with Fischer arriving hours late and complaining about everything from his hotel being bugged to the cameras being too loud.
Another world champion, albeit unofficial, who may have been driven mad by chess was the American Paul Morphy (1837-1884). It was said he had a fetish for women’s shoes and would wander the streets of New Orleans muttering incomprehensibly to himself.

The champ in a bit of a pro-celeb blindfold simul. That they ain't great players makes a bit of a differnce and that Carlsen was playing on time also does.

Fucking Maurice Ashley, the voice of excitable chess, hosting does not bode well. As does his talking over moves. But yay and amazement at Carlsen so easy. As per, blindfold is a destroyer of minds and souls and fucks:
