Interesting article which elaborates on what I've said about FIDE being as or more bent than FIFA and the IOC: https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016 ... mpionship/

Good old Peter from 42.00 talking about watching England in India. :)

Bad old Peter and Jan just after not knowing the tournament draw rule is only after 30 moves bar threefold repetition. :(

Yay, tiebreaks and four rapidplays. And yay to Mugnus Carlsen; :) 8) The Master, the Grandmaster, some say greatest ever:

See the Guard commentary: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/ ... eaker-live

Best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 6 - 6 Karjakin

Best of four rapidplay:

Carlsen 3 - 1 Karjakin

See also here: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/mag ... mpionship/
Not seen these rapidplay games yet, but Carlsen was taken to the wire in standard play, Karjakin a master defender. On his 26th birthday as well, possibly best ever bests again.

Happy man and less happy man:

Isnt there gonna be any TF chess games played on this thread?

I remember playing a game or two on TF in about 2007, er I got thrashed im afraid.
I think it was against Carlos...

Hey saintgeorge. Kowalski and I often play on chess.com. Join up there and either of us will give you a game if you want. Not much time before Christmas though, but New Year, plenty.

To round off the World Chess championship 2016 posts, here's Jerry on the rapidplay tie-breaks. Sounding hoarse as per a long series. Have to say, his analysis and Karjakin's defending in game 2 were both superb. Boo for me that in game 4 of rapidplay with Karjakin needing a win to stay alive and a blitz double header, we have a Sicilian. And how beautiful to win the world Chess Championship with a queen sacrifice. 8) :

GM Danny King also gets excited by the queen sac:

Will leave you with Magnus on winning. Some opine a dull set of games, little action, boring Ruy Lopez's but disagree. Had wonderful defence by Karjakin and with each game drawing the tension ramped up. Karjakin winning on game 8 left Carlsen four games to win one or lose his title. That he did win in game 10 and off to tie-breaks we went. Thouroughly enjoyed it all, and leaving with Jerry's thoughts, hope you got something out of it.

Dear old Peter Svidler calling 38....Ra1 out immediately after Karjakin played 38. Rxc7 is glorious in game 3 of the tie-breaks. Start at 3h48m:

Svidler seeing and "whoaing" the queen sac just after 5h and watching Carlsen do it on the board to win is immense:

Quite a fascinating video. Look at Morphy, as per, and Capablanca, Bobby Fischer, Kasparov and onto Magnus:

Just watched Jerry summarising this game from 1834. Look at the pawns. Three pawns worth 3 points v queen and rook (15pts) and they destroy it. Marvellous:

Has the forum tournament ever gotten off the ground ?

There was a large chess set where you carry the pieces about in the local Intu shopping centre over the last two weeks. Sadly it has remained untouched. Perhaps reflective of the general level of the population to be found in Watford and probably over Britain in general. More interested in getting phone covers from a stall nearby.

The tournament never really happened, ove, many keen. I play Kowalski and Jock fairly regularly. Well did until recently but our free hours seldom click now so more difficult. We'll play again soon. PM them if interested as both like a game.

Shame about the board in the Intu. Maybe some games have been played and they reposition the pieces after. There's an Intu here, but don't go in that often and not seen a board. Quite fancy a large garden set myself. :)
