Has anyone ever spoiled their ballot? And if so, what did you write?
I haven't myself, although I've been tempted.

I used to all the time. Just wrote none of the above across it or once or twice something stronger.
Im totally against the clamour for compulsary voting but think its right that at least i get out and register disgust.
As it happens i wont be able to vote this time as i dont have any valid photo id. If i lived in some other areas that would not be a problem.

Re: Has anyone ever spoiled their ballot?
Spoilt votes get more attention than you might think at the count. Once the obvious votes are tallied up all eyes go to the 'spoilt' pile.
A representative from each party gathers round as a count official holds up each 'spoilt' in turn. Every party hopes they can claim the spoilt paper as a vote for themselves. For instance if a paper with 'FUCK OFF' scrawled across it happens to have the final 'F' in a box, the party that box belongs to will try to claim it as their vote. It's normally laughed off but I've seen them given.
The best version of this scrutiny I witnessed was at Alexandria Palace for one of the GLA elections; the spoilts were placed on an overhead projector and displayed on a big screen. What seemed a good idea at the time quickly turned to embarrassment as each sweary scrawl, Anarchist symbol or slogan enhanced paper was displayed across the hall - and there were lots of them. It reminded me of being at a Crass gig!
I remember one paper was completely covered in small, spidery writing - which carried on all over the back as well.
So remember a spoilt vote is not wasted.

It counts as a vote for you to be included on a different kind of register if you were a teacher at the time.shabbado wrote:Once drew a cock on a ballot paper during a school election, does that count?

It's a criminal offence with a maximum two-year jail tariff, and you have now incriminated yourself.shabbado wrote:Once drew a cock on a ballot paper during a school election, does that count?
