If you look at the election map the only areas where labour can scrape a few mps are towns with white minorities or large ethnic populations , or in areas like the north east and South Wales where could stick a red rosette on a donkey and it would get elected. Labour thought muslim voters would want a Jewish pm.

More than 100 people voted for former Eurovision star Ronnie Carroll in the General Election even though he died in April.

Mr Carroll, who was born in Belfast, was well known for his big UK hit, Roses are Red.

He died on 13 April, days after getting his name printed on ballot papers for the Hampstead & Kilburn constituency.

He had billed himself as the Eurovisionary Carroll and at the polls, 113 people gave him their vote.

Mr Carroll represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1962 and 1963 with Ring-A-Ding Girl and Say Wonderful Things, finishing fourth both times.

He had been due to stand as an independent in the election.

He had previously stood unsuccessfully in elections under the banner of parties such as Make Politicians History.

In the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in 2008, he failed in his mission to get no votes, gaining an almost respectable 29.

Born Ronald Cleghorn, he was married at one stage to That Was The Week That Was star Millicent Martin.

He died, aged 80, after a short illness.

It is a sad state of affairs that 'we' still largely fall for the 2 party option time and again, but at least the 'least worst' option won out.

The core vote for the Conservatives come from rural and semi-rural parts of the UK. The South of England has vast swathes of this, the exceptions being London, Brighton, Luton Bristol, Exeter, Norwich etc. The north of England is more urbanised which is why we see prominent flashes of red on their political map. Even in Scotland the Conservatives would do well in rural areas such as Angus or Dumfries, until the 1980's when they pissed off everyone there.

People's ideological choice ruled during the build up, but when it came to the crunch the though of putting an incapable marxist laughing stock in power made them come to their senses.
