The voices don't have to be particularly good, although some of them are spot-on; it's the scripts that capture the essence of whoever he's doing.
I remember a spot he used to do on H&J where the listeners set him a challenge every week ... "Jack Bannister commentates on Beach Volleyball" lives on in my memory :-)

You're right he gets the scripts absolutely right every time and that along with the pretty good voices makes them great like they are. I wonder if one day he'll make a real long one that includes all of the presenters because let's face it he'll never run out of material with that shower on the books.

He was a superb talent on local radio well before he went to Talkbollocks.

I'm amazed he's lasted so long with the talent he has given other 'top comics' allegedly work there too. Apparently.

To be fair, Stan doesn't strike me as being particularly able to laugh at himself. He is also huge and capable of violence. If Danter had made it too accurate/cruel you really don't know how he would have reacted.
