BBC re-making classic comedies

Post by carcinogen »

Sorry. No. Not having it. How the fuck can you re-make Hancock's Half Hour without Tony Hancock? 'Porridge' without Ronnie Barker? It's fucking futile. It would be like your mate re-painting the Sistine chapel using cheap B&Q own-brand magnolia. What a sorry fucking state. Do you think the rise of social media has somehow robbed a generation of writing skills? Surely someone can pen a decent new sitcom. Surely the BBc doesn't need to re-hash old formats to remain relevant and gloss-over the ridiculous license-fee. Maybe it HAS come to this. Maybe those of us here should write a sitcom; 'Carry-On Talkforum' or something. Fucking nora. Let's get this done and save ourselves from the embarrassment of a re-jigged Tony Hancock. Tony is a personal hero of mine, poor bastard.

Tony Hancock was a right cunt, and total shit, much like your good self. I suppose Stewart Lee is the "new" Hancock - worshipped by horrific friendless virgins.

A witty fucking miserable cunt though. Much like myself. :butthead: Be honest, you'd rather spend half an hour with Tony Hancock, or even myself, than suffer thirty minutes of existence with that Jonathan Creek cunt, Alan Davies? Fucking nora, now that bloke is the definition of an unfunny smug fuckwit.

They should remake Love Thy Neighbour and Mind your Language and just see what the rating are. It's only the PC bunch who banned these. Almost everyone with anything to do with them at the time had a right fucking hoot of a time which brought people closer together though laughter. It still exists in bucket loads today between cultures up to the point where anyone 'official' or from the council pokes their fucking noses in and stops it.

I agree with what you're saying, but those two shows were utter shite.

It's because it's safe, lazy and easy.

It's the same with Hollywood, it's why they keep remaking films, they know it will put bums on seats and they keep hiring the same writers and directors to make them.

It's not that there is no new talent out there, it's just thant it's now a closed shop.

It did become a little silly in the later episodes (the Noel Coward bits in particular).
I'll watch anything time travel related though.

I thought they included Til Death Do Us Part among these re-makes, Mark.

Was that not the case?

That was the daddy of all those shows

Johnny Speight and Warren Mitchell did more to ridicule racist stereotyping in this country than all the PC fanatics put together.

They lampooned prejudice through Alf Garnett and did much to change the way white people thought about the way they regarded those of a different ethnicity.
Alex Young, Howard Kendall, Andy King, Timmy Cahill, Dixie Dean and Mike Parry.....we'll never see the likes of them again.

I think that it was Speight who was the real instigator behind the bigotry, Pet. Dear old Warren was Jewish and was only camping it up, never watched Til Death Do Us Apart as it was before my time but did watch In Sickness and in Health in the mid 80s when the gay, black house cleaner Marigold was the object of Garnett's disgust which was opposed to the leftie played by Cherie Booth's dad. Thought it was funny for a while but this sterotyping became tired and ridiculous.

Exactly. I've genuinely never met anyone other than people who've been politically indoctrinated or base their career on finding offence who are so sensitive about their background the mere mention of it is deemed offensive. Utter cock.

It just demonstrates these types either don't mix with others or only mix with like-minded liberals pretending to uphold their rights on their behalf as the apparently cannot do it for themselves. How utterly patronising.

Everytime I've had a crack at someone else's language they're usually all laughing at me, which is fine by me and mainly the intention.

Jews tell jewish jokes, irish tell irish jokes and great fun is had by all. Russell Peters , a white Australian Indian tells Indian jokes and do on and so forth. These PC idiots will want Father Ted banned next as the self deprecating fun they poke at themselves will be deemed (by them ) as offensive.

It's all total bollocks as far as I'm concerned and they've literally banned comedy. Now all we have is Matt Forde and John fucking unfunny Richardson.

I think it is even worse than that, Mark.

I have long believed the most vehemently vociferous homophobic elements of our society are people whom are worried and unsure about their own sexuality and over compensate by baying about the evils of same sex couplings.

They watch porn movies and find themselves looking more at the big dicks than the big tits and they hate themselves for it....so they vent about gays.

Same with the PC mob.

Whereas the likes of you and me are comfortable with all groups and see the the humour in racially or other stereotyping jokes as being in the absurdity of it rather than the actual content, which was the whole point Speight and Mitchell were making with Alf Garnett, the PC brigade worry that they in actual fact find themselves chuckling at the joke itself and that worries them.

So they spend their time being recreationally offended and trying to show how right on they are by correcting every bugger whom says he was "out for a Chinky last night".

I have been admonished on this here bailiwick for saying just that.... :(

(He knows who he is....don't worry 'bout that :x ......and he got a good :box: for his trouble).
Alex Young, Howard Kendall, Andy King, Timmy Cahill, Dixie Dean and Mike Parry.....we'll never see the likes of them again.

I disagree. I think ol pet is spot on. He always tends to be spot when he makes a long post for some reason.

People are only too happy to discuss their background IMO and it promotes a better understanding than if they don't.

Something I didn't know when talking to a friend of mine about when he first came to this country and suffered racism was the myth black people had tails. He was quite OK with it years later because he just put it down to people's ignorance and had made many friends since.

when I speak to him now and say I'll meet you in an hour, we'll both take the piss about whether it's a Jamaican hour or an English one. Any fucker from the councill overhearing would have one of us up on race charges, guess which one.

This is why I have no time for any of this rubbish where normal good manners and politeness solve any problems.

What people find offensive is bigotry and prejudice based on ignorance,.

Love Thy Neighbour and its ilk were regarded as embarrassingly bad by everyone under 40 at the time.

Some disliked its excruciatingly puerile racism on ideological grounds, but most just thought it was unfunny shit - and the reason it was unfunny was because it was so crass and the characters were ridiculous.

Till Death Us Do Part worked at the time because it rang true and the characters were recognisable.
