No, that was later. Wiki says he became a Jehovah's Witness in 2001. Interestingly it also says he refused hip replacement surgery because JW's are against blood transfusions (which you'd most likely need during such a major procedure), with the hip being knackered due energetic to dancing, and him walking with a cane. Perhaps that's why he was taking the painkillers... an overdose of which might be the cause of death according to some sources.

In answer to the question - Prince was one of the greatest rock stars ever. Someone mentioned a painkiller overdose, that appears to be true based on the Beeb news a few minutes ago. A sad loss, in my opinion.
