Old emails downloading on to new phone

I keep downloading 100 old emails at a time to my new iPhone. It's using up s lot of data when I'm not at home. Is there a simple way to stop this?

Download them all whilst on wifi?

Or set your account so that it doesn't hold too many weeks worth of emails, assuming you have access to them by another method.
