Windows 8 is excellent, as are all versions of Windows. The only people who hate it are those who either:

Don't know how to tweak it to their preference

Or

Just like bitching about change. Any change.

No dear, it's shit.

Even MS knows it's shit and are working on the next version right now.

Noticed from yesterday, that I have a Windows icon at the bottom of desktop saying 'get windows 10'. Saw a bulletin a few days ago saying launch is July. Haven't clicked on it yet, but wondering what others think about upgrading (which is free for 12 months). Currently on Windows 7.

Do you have to backup everything before ugrading as a necessity rather than as a precaution, or would the transition be transparent, and everything you have there now will be there after?

Mmm.. Got this icon myself and it doesn't have a don't show me again option so is there at every boot up.

I've got my original installation of W7 on a back up so I can restore back to that (presumably) if I don't like it. Plus I'm still pretty much a mouse person rather than everything touch screen which seems to be the main reason to upgrade to W10.

I think the best thing to do is read some online reviews listing any pitfalls at this stage of limited information ,as well as find out what period the offer is open for.

I don't actually see anything in there that makes me want to up-heave everything again and make another upgrade.

They say performance and boot up times are quicker which is the only thing on that list worth looking at from my perspective. I couldn't care less about live desktop searches or better file searching as it's already indexed on W7 and fast enough for me as it is.

Short of accepting the upgrade purely on the grounds of lengthening the lifespan Microsoft spend writing fixes for bugs for their operating systems or for those using plenty of touch screen devices, I can't see a compelling reason to switch. I could find various bits of free software that make up for the new enhancements anyway. As it stands W7 is running just fine.

XP lasted for 15 years with plenty of happy customers who were disappointed to see them ditch supporting the system. The only decent reason to have done so was that XP didn't support modern multi-core processors. Not so with W7.

I get the impression MS might not sell to many operating systems unless they are for new machines which is why they are offering free upgrades to users with older systems. Their track record for introducing quality new operating systems is also a bit chequered apart from some really great ones like XP at the time. Only windows 2000 and W7 get grouped in that bracket.

Stick or twist? I'll stick

Interesting stuff, and I guess one of the considerations is how long MS will support 7

This was annoying me like mad so I found this solution to remove it.

Go to Control Panel, then Windows update, then go to installed updates at the bottom left, and then remove update KB3035583, and remember to right click and hide it when you next scan for updates.

Good work Lash and thanks. =D>

As an extra tip for anyone wanting to do the same who like me saw a mountain of updates and thought 'How the fuck am I gonna find that one amongst that lot' - they're in date order so it will be almost at the top.
