Twelve years and only 4 different world no.1s in that time - that's some golden era of tennis for the men.
Going to be a strange landscape in 3 or 4 years from now.

That Number One Ranking Trophy feels almost as good as Arsene Wenger's Fourth Place Trophy. Well Done Andy . What a Year.

Ah yes the guy he destroyed in 3 sets to win his 2nd Wimbledon defaulted. Can you blame him.
Oh and Murray has won his 6th ATP of the year in Paris to go with Wimbledon and a 2nd Olympic gold.

Personally, I'd say the Borg/McEnroe/Connors era was the best, Del.delboy1983 wrote: in the most talented era of men's tennis ever
But it is all subjective, I guess.

Agree, you had some players with personalities then. Djokovic and Murray are a pair of boring cunts.Steve Hunt wrote:Personally, I'd say the Borg/McEnroe/Connors era was the best, Del.delboy1983 wrote: in the most talented era of men's tennis ever

Del said most talented, and he is correct.Steve Hunt wrote:Personally, I'd say the Borg/McEnroe/Connors era was the best, Del.delboy1983 wrote: in the most talented era of men's tennis ever

Of course the era you reference had more 'characters' and they were great players too, but this current era of the 'big 4' is without doubt the most talented to all be at the top of their game at the same time and Fed will probably go down as the greatest ever.
That's the distinction and I'm sure our tennis(man) expert would agree.
Murray is a Marmite sportsman - I love him and also think he is great to watch because of some of the amazing shots he is able to make. Added to which he freely gives his time and support to the other British players (men and women), which will hopefully lead to some sort of legacy when he retires even though I doubt there will be anyone to match his level for generations if ever.

I suspect the likes of Borg, Conners & Mac would have risen to the challenge were they playing today, Lou.Lou Grant wrote:Steve Hunt wrote:Personally, I'd say the Borg/McEnroe/Connors era was the best, Del.delboy1983 wrote: in the most talented era of men's tennis ever

But we will never know. You can only be the best in the era you play in.

Re: GOOD OLD ANDY WORLD NUMBER ONE AFTER WITHDRAWAL??!!
Does any sport have characters any more ,certainly in tennis the single mindedness and work ethic to get tothe very top precludes that.
Football a la George Best
Rugby a la David Campese
Motor Racing a la Ayrton Senna
Cricket a la Ian Botham.
A lot of people bemoan the lack of entertaining characters in Sport nowadays but should you want to see them in Tennis you would need to watch Mansour Bahrami v Henri Leconte .
Me I'll stick to marveling at the power skill and athleticism of Federer Nadal Djokovic and Andy Murray

Re: GOOD OLD ANDY WORLD NUMBER ONE AFTER WITHDRAWAL??!!
With those mentioned from the past you had the best of both. What we have now, is baseline monotony for much of the time with girlie two handed backhands, players wanting a towel after every point, and a selection of 4 or 5 balls every time they serve when they are all the same. It's just delaying tacticsdelboy1983 wrote: Me I'll stick to marveling at the power skill and athleticism of Federer Nadal Djokovic and Andy Murray

Re: GOOD OLD ANDY WORLD NUMBER ONE AFTER WITHDRAWAL??!!
Kyrgios may challenge that notion. He's a 'nasty' character, but definitely a character, and also in pure tennis terms he is a joy to watch. No reason he couldn't become a genuine top player, but we shall see.delboy1983 wrote:Does any sport have characters any more ,certainly in tennis the single mindedness and work ethic to get tothe very top precludes that.
