First bit of sense I've heard about Glenda being linked to the job. Heard Matt Dickinson from The Times say today that he had no idea why because his last position in football was with Wolves ten years ago which was a bit of a disaster.

True.

But of the bunch being talked about, I'd say Hoddle IS STILL the best choice.

Which says an awful lot about the state of the game.
If Arsenal were playing in my back garden, I would draw the curtains.

Steve, you're a big Spurs fan. How come Hoddle continues to be a great influence within the game? He was obviously well liked as a player and considered to be highly gifted.

His popularity in the media and wide support for the next national coaching job seems to be a bit odd. He left Gazza out of the 1998 World Cup squad which other managers such as Graham Taylor or Capello would have been absolutely hammered for even if Gazza was in decline at the time. Hoddle also took the media on and was often abrupt with them. His offensive comments about disabled people and the Eileen Drury connection attracted disdain and ridicule. Hoddle pretty much got a reputation as being an adventurous and attack minded coach only really materialised on the back of the World Cup 98 second round match against Argentina which we lost on penalties and it could be argued that England only really did well in the match because Michael Owen was unstoppable and a real talent.

So really, Hoddle seems to command some great presence despite being only an average manager and still being rather aloof and seemingly confrontational (my perception anyway). He's someone that players previously haven't connected with and I think he'd rub a lot of them up the wrong way if he ever came back which I honestly don't think will happen.

Can't see anyone beyond Southgate taking charge and I'm talking about a permanent manager. He's safe, an establishment figure and likes coaching manuals.

Lansy, i'm not suggesting that Hoddle is the best coach to do the job. He's not - the best would be Jose, imo.

I'm suggesting that he is the best amongst those being touted. At least he has the experience of managing the England team.

At least God would be on our side. We just need him to referee the games.

Steve, that's fine mate. I was floating the question and it was a little rhetorical. :) Not challenging you and Mourinho would be OK but the England job but he's more suited for the cut and thrust of day to day club management.

I would give it to Big Sam.

They have tried flavour of the month Englishmen like Robson, Hoddle and Kegser Keegan.

They have gone for the sexy foreigner approach of Sven and Cappelah.

They have tried with shady home grown blokes like Revie and El Tel.

And with blazered establishment types like Greenwood and Woy.

All to no avail.

Try sommat different FFS.......get Big Sam in,

He says he is good enough to manage Real Madrid so he must be food enough for England.
Alex Young, Howard Kendall, Andy King, Timmy Cahill, Dixie Dean and Mike Parry.....we'll never see the likes of them again.

Only 2 names touted that have even remotely resonated with me are Laurent Blanc and Guus Hiddinck.

Yep. Would be way out of his depth.
Judging by the list of British candidates, I'd look abroad.

You left out return of the Home Internationals , but the current political scene might put the scuppers on that.

Southgate's ruled himself out. Doesn't want the job even on a temporary basis.

Our football team should try and be more like our rugby boys and Eddie Jones. They'll be beating the kiwis soon no problem
